Engaging communities

Communications programmes for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) aim to engage communities and families, particularly mothers, to ensure they know the effects of the poliovirus, and why it is important to give the Oral Polio Vaccine to all children under five years of age each time it is offered. The communications programmes are managed by UNICEF and national governments.

PolioInfo, developed by UNICEF, presents the latest social data collected from each polio campaign on behalf of the GPEI, and brings the data to life with stories from the frontline. The social data and the stories that accompany it reflect the local communication plans and strategies that address the barriers of each country’s unique context.

In these final stages of the programme, communications programmes aim to reach the most disadvantaged and vulnerable populations who are most at risk of being missed. These groups hold the key to polio eradication worldwide.
