Afghanistan

Status: endemic

Most of Afghanistan is polio-free. Persistent wild poliovirus transmission is largely estricted to 13 districts in the provinces of Helmand, Kandahar and Uruzgan in the south of the country, where accessing children is difficult due to insecurity and conflict. In addition, Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan repeatedly re-infect one other, with Afghanistan appearing to receive a higher share of the poliovirus importations.

Polio this week in Afghanistan:

  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2012 remains six. The total number of cases for 2011 remains 80. The most recent case was type WPV1 from Kandahar, with onset of paralysis on 14 March.
  • The technical advisory group meeting was held this week (6–7 May). The group reviewed latest epidemiology and discussed new strategic approaches and the national polio emergency action plan. Key is not only to address access concerns due to insecurity, but also managerial issues affecting the implementation of polio activities. Some data suggests that since the middle of last year, access to populations has improved in Southern Region, however a continuing decline in vaccination coverage suggests problems related to management issues persist.
  • The next subnational immunization days will be held on 3-5 June. In border areas, the activity will be synchronized with neighbouring Pakistan.
