Nigeria

Status: endemic

Nigeria is one of the most entrenched reservoirs of wild poliovirus in the world. It is the only country with ongoing transmission of all three serotypes: wild poliovirus type 1, wild poliovirus type 3, and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2. States in the north of the country are the main source of polio infections elsewhere in Nigeria and in neighbouring countries. In 2009, operational improvements in these northern states led to a 90% decline in cases of wild poliovirus type 1 and a 50% decline in overall cases compared with 2008.

Polio this week in Nigeria

  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2012 remains 28. The total number of cases for 2011 remains 62. The most recent case was a WPV1 with onset of paralysis on 26 March from Katsina.
  • The community mobilization network is being further scaled up in Kano, Sokoto and Kebbi, to further support activities and create demand for immunizations.
  • The Presidential Task Force is expected to meet with all Deputy Governors over the coming weeks to discuss their roles in polio eradication. In Nigeria, Deputy Governors have been charged by State Governors with overseeing polio eradication in each state.
  • Preparations are on course for supplementary immunization activities in May in 10 high-risk areas. The activity will be staggered, held on 12-15 May in some areas, followed by 18-21 May in others. In this way, technical support can be redeployed to support the activity in all high-risk areas.
