Headlines
  • In Chad, the series of staggered immunization campaigns originally planned to begin in late April have now been postponed until June. Please see 're-infected countries' section below for further details.
Endemic countries
Afghanistan
  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2008 remains five. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 7 March (WPV1 from Kandahar).
  • The next supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) will be held on 1 June, using monovalent oral polio vaccine type 1 (mOPV1).
India
  • 15 new cases were reported in the past week (all WPV3s, nine from Bihar, five from Uttar Pradesh and one from Delhi), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to 216 (two of this week's newly reported cases are from 2007). The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 16 April (WPV3 from Uttar Pradesh).
  • In Bihar, reports from the most recent SIAs (conducted on 27 April-2 May) indicate improved vaccination coverage in remote, access-compromised areas, most notably in the Kosi river basin. A special strategy has been implemented to increase coverage in this area, and technical support has been scaled up.
  • The next SIAs in India are tentatively scheduled for 18 May, in high-risk blocks of Bihar, with mOPV1. This activity will be followed by Subnational Immunization Days (SNIDs) in early June in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai and other at-risk border areas, using monovalent OPV type 3 (mOPV3).
Nigeria
  • 11 new cases were reported in the past week (all WPV1s), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to 137. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 3 April (WPV1 from Zamfara).
  • The next Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) will be staggered, to allow maximum technical staff deployment to the highest-risk Local Government Areas (LGAs) in highest-risk states. The staggered IPDs will be conducted on 10-14 May in eight northern states, followed by Kano and Kebbi on 17-20 May.
Pakistan
  • One new case was reported in the past week (WPV1, from southern Sindh), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to five. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 5 April (WPV1 from southern Sindh).
  • National Immunization Days, using trivalent OPV, were conducted on 6-8 May. Major inauguration events were held both at national and provincial levels, and new commitments and support for polio eradication were evident. For example, the federal highway police 'adopted' polio eradication, as police cars carried polio logos and OPV was administered at toll booths and rest areas.
  • The next supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) will be held on 3 June, using mOPV1.
Importation countries
Angola
  • Two new cases were reported in the past week (WPV3s from Luanda), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to five. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 29 March (WPV3 from Luanda).
  • NIDs scheduled for 16-18 May will use a mix of mOPV1 and mOPV3.
Central African Republic (CAR)
  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2008 remains one. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 6 April (WPV1 from Bangui).
  • NIDs will be conducted on 16 May.
Chad
  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2008 remains two. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 3 February (WPV3 from N'Djamena).
  • The staggered SIAs, which had originally been planned to begin end-April (followed by campaigns in May, June and July) have been postponed. The first of the activities are now scheduled to commence in late June.
Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo)
  • One new case was reported in the past week (WPV1 from Nord Kivu), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to two. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 24 March (WPV1 from Nord Kivu).
  • This most recent case in Nord Kivu is close to the border with Uganda. Disease surveillance is being strengthened in Uganda and a contingency immunization plan for border areas to minimize the risk of infection has been developed. In neighbouring Burundi and Rwanda, surveillance is also being strengthened, and contingency plans will also be developed.
  • The next SNIDs will be held on 8-10 May, targeting six million children with mOPV1.
Horn of Africa
  • No new cases were reported in the past week from the Horn of Africa.
  • In response to confirmation of a recent case in the Ethiopia/south Sudan cross border area, a combined, cross-border outbreak response is currently being planned. Two large-scale SIAs covering southern Sudan (targeting 2.5 million children) and covering 52 waredas (districts) of south-western Ethiopia (targeting 400,000 children) will be conducted on 9 May and again on 6 June. Longer term plans are being formulated.
Nepal
  • No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2008 remains three. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 16 February (WPV3 from Janakpur zone). The cases in Nepal in 2008 have all occurred in district bordering Bihar, India.
  • The most recent SNIDs started 26 April, using mOPV1 and mOPV3. Nepal has held four SIAs since December 2007, two of which were NIDs and two were in the high-risk districts bordering Bihar, India.
Niger
  • One new case was reported in the past week (WPV1 from Zinder), bringing the total number of cases for 2008 to six. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 2 April (WPV1 from Zinder).
  • The most recent SNIDs with mOPV1 were held on 5-7 April, and the next activity is planned for 10-12 May.
