Namibia launches second round of response to
importation of polio
The second of three planned National Immunization Days (NIDs) starts in Namibia
today, following an outbreak of poliovirus affecting mostly adults. All the
country's 2 million people will be vaccinated to protect them from any further
spread of polio.

G8 commits its support to polio eradication so that the
planet can be declared polio-free within the next few years
The spearheading partners of the Global Polio
Eradication Initiative welcome the political statements testifying to the
long-standing support of the Group of Eight and call urgently on the G8 to turn
these statements into action. A shortfall of US$ 85 million for the remainder of
2006 must be filled immediately, in addition to the 2007-2008 funding gap of US$
400 million. Without these funds, immunization activities in key polio-affected
and high-risk countries will have to be scaled-back, which could result in a
higher number of children being paralysed for life.
