India calls for polio meeting with
affected states
India's
Minister of Health, Anbumani Ramadoss, has called a meeting today of health
ministers from states with cases of polio this year. Only two states in India
still have native poliovirus transmission: Uttar Pradesh (269 cases this year to
date) and Bihar (17 cases). Intense poliovirus transmission in the western
corner of Uttar Pradesh, due to a failure to reach all children with polio
vaccine, has sparked an
outbreak that has caused cases in several polio-free states of the country,
including Uttaranchal, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. All
the affected states are expected to participate in the meeting to discuss novel
ways of reaching all children with vaccine to end the outbreak, protect the rest
of India and ultimately stop transmission of polio.
