Endemic countries

Milestone 1: by end-2007 there should be a 50% reduction in the number of polio-infected districts relative to 2006.
Status: On track. 75% decline in type 1 polio-infected districts. (Since 2006, the interruption of type 1 polio has been the first priority of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative due to its higher paralytic rate and propensity towards international spread compared to type 3 polio).
Details on Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan (pdf)

Milestone 2: by end-2007 the level of immunity against polio among children aged 6-35 months in infected districts should be at least at the level in polio-free districts.
Status: 7 of 9 endemic transmission zones on track. Details (pdf)

Re-infected countries

Milestone 3: by end-2007, countries reinfected in 2006 will have implemented appropriate response activities and interrupted transmission of the imported poliovirus.
Status: On track. Outbreaks stopped in 10 of 13 countries. Details (pdf)

International stakeholders

Milestone 4: by mid-2007 sufficient funding will have been pledged to finance all eradication activities planned through end-2007.
Status: Missed. US$ 60 million funding gap for activities in fourth quarter of 2007. Details (pdf)

The Case was developed following an 'Urgent Stakeholder Consultation on Polio Eradication' convened in February 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland.
